The Sledgehammer is similar to the Hammer, except, it's more powerful! You can use it when you're playing a level by tapping its icon on the right side of the screen.

Tap the Sledgehammer, then tap the element you want to hit. It removes one row and one column of pieces and obstacles, just like the Soda+Soda combination.
